Nursery Spring Term Challenges

Reception Spring Term Challenges

Reading at Home

Please read every day at home for at least 10 minutes.

Reception children may read their school reading book and/or enjoy a shared book at home with an adult.

Nursery children should enjoy shared books at home, with an adult reading aloud.

We encourage you to read with your child and talk about the book together.

Please write a short comment in your child’s reading record, noting:

- Anything your child did well

 - Anything they needed support with

 - Any shared books you read together and highlights from the session

Thank you for supporting your child’s reading. Regular reading at home helps children build language, confidence, and a love of books.

Mathematics for Reception: Will be set weekly on Mathseeds.

PE:

Please bring in PE kit at the start of term.

It will be kept in school for the half term unless you request it or we think it needs a wash.

P.E. will be on a Thursday.

Outdoor Learning:

Wellies and waterproofs (tops and trousers) need to be brought in from home and will be kept here for the half term.

Outdoor learning will take place weekly.

Reception Reading

Following updated guidance from the DfE, we now teach phonics using Essential Letters and Sounds (ELS). This programme is based on Letters and Sounds (2007) and supports children to make quick progress towards becoming confident, fluent readers.

Reading Books

  • Children’s reading books are changed once a week on Fridays.

  • This allows children to re-read the same text several times, helping to build confidence and fluency.

  • Re-reading is especially important as children learn that sounds can be spelt in different ways.

All reading books sent home are carefully matched to the phonics taught in school.

  • Children will only be asked to read books independently when they can decode them.

  • Books that are not yet fully decodable are sharing books. These are for you to enjoy together, either by:

    • Reading to your child, or

    • Sharing the text and encouraging your child to read any words they recognise

This helps develop both reading skills and a love of books.

Nursery Reading

Nursery children also follow Essential Letters and Sounds.

  • From the Spring Term onwards, children begin learning letter sounds through fun, practical activities.

  • At this stage, reading focuses on sharing books, listening to stories, talking about pictures, and enjoying reading together.

Reading regularly at home supports children’s language development and prepares them well for formal phonics learning in Reception.
